Come along to Tysfjord for close-up
photography of KILLER WHALES!
Hundreds of killer whales gather in Tysfjord each
winter to feast on the returning herring. You are 95
% certain to come into close proximity of these
gracious creatures in this relatively small fjord.
In addition to the killer whales, there are good
stocks of sea eagles and seabirds in the area.
Norway’s national mountain, Stetind, to the north
and Vestfjorden and the
Lofoten Mountains to the west, serve as the ideal
background for this
workshop. We try to time this workshop so that we
get started after the killer whales have entered
Tysfjord, yet early enough so that the sun still
provides us with adequate shutter times and gleaming
whales. Some of the theory
we will spend time discussing at this workshop will
be related to:
-
Composition and layout of pictures
-
Become a better nature photographer (photographing
landscapes, animals/birds and macro)
-
Various photo techniques (action photography,
panning, camouflage, etc.)
-
Planning a photography project
-
Photographic expression in your pictures
-
Image processing in Photoshop / RAW file
conversion (as a reserve method if the weather
turns bad...)
Most participants will probably be
taking digital photographs, and it is therefore wise
to bring along a laptop if you have one, so that we
can view the results of your efforts immediately.
Upon returning after a photo session, we will be
reviewing the participant’s pictures on a large
screen as a means of sharing comments and
inspiration for more photography.
The workshop will begin on
Thursday 8 November at about 20:00 with a late
dinner. The course will officially wrap up Sunday 11
February at 14:00 with lunch. All food, lodging,
lectures and transport during the course are
included in the course fee.
Required skills: It
is advantageous if you have some previous experience
with the use of your photographic equipment.
Photographing killer whales is quite demanding so
you will have an advantage if you have also
participated in earlier workshops in nature
photography.
Price & Registration:
The workshop costs NOK 6 650 per person for double
room accommodations. Anyone wishing single room
accommodations are required to pay an additional
charge of NOK 1 000. The price includes all meals
starting with dinner Thursday evening and ending
with lunch on Sunday. Registration is done by
submitting a signed booking form. Terms and
conditions are clearly stated on our booking form.
Registration is binding and course participants will
be sent an invoice which shall be paid in advance
per the agreed upon deadline. Course participants
bear responsibility for purchasing their own
cancellation insurance if this is desired. Our
policy is "first come, first served", so be sure to
register plenty early.
Food and Lodging:
[Tysfjord Tourist Center] will serve as the base for
our workshop. Here we will be staying close to the
fjord and will thus not need to travel so far by
boat in order to locate the killer whales. We will
all bring a packed lunch on Friday and Saturday when
we head out on 2 long
boat tours.
Safety: We will
use a sturdy rafting boat
for this workshop with
adequate space for 15 photographers. This boat is
specially suited to rough seas and can quickly come
in close proximity to the killer whales. Each
passenger will be able to borrow
(for free) safety clothing which will keep
you good and warm during the boat trip. Remember to
wear suitable footwear (i.e. winter/rubber boots
with warm socks), warm headwear and gloves/mittens
as it can be a bit cold at this time of year.
Photo Equipment:
Recommended optics includes telephoto lens up to
300mm, along with a zoom lens around 70-200mm in
order to capture some of the surroundings. If we
come extremely close to our subjects, a zoom lens
such as 24-70mm can come in handy. NOTE: It
is preferable that we limit the amount of equipment
we take along in the boat due to restricted space
and sea spray.
Snorkeling: Anyone who has
not "had their fill" of whales or who would like to
snorkel with the killer whales may individually make
a reservation for one of the tourist center’s "Tourist
Tours" on the Sunday following the conclusion of the
workshop. NOTE: This is not included in the
workshop fee, but we can assist you with obtaining a
reduced price for the tour.
Course
Leader: Ole Jørgen
Liodden
Transport: There are
flights to both Bodø and Narvik with connecting bus
service out to Tysfjord. More information about
transport options will be provided well in advance
of the start date for the workshop. |
